OAL Adventure Training (In-Person)

The Outdoor Activity Leadership program is designed to empower Guiders with the tools and skills to feel confident taking girls of all ages outside in a variety of settings.
The Adventure Camping Training modules are part of the OAL Enrichment Stream. This training provides a formal structured training that will build Guiders' knowledge, skills and capacity for adventure camping, ultimately enabling them to meet the Safe Guide requirements for leading adventurous camping trips for girls.
This in-person weekend will cover the OAL Adventure Modules 1, 4, 5, 6, and 7.
Module 1 - Trip Design and Structure
After completing this modules, participants will:
- understand the major steps to designing and planning and adventure trip
- be able to identify and research the key planning considerations (the who, what, where, when, why and how) of an adventure trip
- be able to develop a sample trip itinerary
- be able to identify what documentation is required from GGC and other agencies depending on the type of trip
Module 4 - Navigation
After completing this module, participants will:
- be familiar with maps/charts, compasses and GPS Units
- have practiced using these tools in a relevant outdoor setting
- feel more confident in their level of navigational knowledge and skill
- recognize the importance of ongoing practice to create the foundation for advanced navigation application
Module 5 - Adventure Camping Gear Module
After completing this module, participants will:
- be able to describe the benefit of using modern gear of an appropriate standard
- feel confident in selecting clothing, boots, and adventure camping equipment
- know how to maintain and repair adventure camping equipment
- understand the benefits of maintaining a gear log (part of the trip log)
- be able to distinguish activity specific gear requirements
- communicate using a variety of emergency signaling techniques and explaining the advantages and disadvantages of each
Module 6 - Adventure Camping Food Module
After completing this module, participants will:
- understand how food planning for an adventure camping trip differs from regular camping
- understand basic dehydration methods and the importance of lightweight food
- be able to discuss and demonstrate three techniques to treat water for drinking
Module 7 - Campsite Management
After completing this module, participants will:
- understand the seven Leave No Trace Principles for camping
- be able to demonstrate how to select an appropriate campsite
- understand how to manage personal hygiene in an adventure camping environment
Prerequisite: OAL Tenting or approved equivalency (must be attached to your iMIS profile)
